The composition of the carpets |
Persian carpets are made of hand spinned sheep wool, which is very strong and has a natural gloss. The higher in the mountains sheep are pastured, the better wool they have. Age of sheep is also very important – best wool is clipped of young 1-2 year old sheep.
Wool and cotton is severed in pashmzani (wool pounding) way and is divided into groups. In Iran this activity is a profession.
For weft and warp not only wool and cotton is used, but also camel and goat fell. Selvages of carpet and ornaments are accentuated by adding some silk, which gives a special gloss to the motives. In some parts of Iran precious silk carpets are woven.
